Landscaping Irrigation Drainage & Plants

Creating drainage especially during our monsoons season is a vital aspect for every residential landscape project in Arizona. Many times, overlooked with our sudden downpours. We believe moving water responsibly is more than pushing water away from a structure. We practice drainage techniques providing protection to your home, building, landscape, and the surrounding desert environment.

Using irrigation as a supplement for watering plants is a necessity in our Arizona climate. Sustainable irrigation incorporates water conservation and proper configuration of the sprinkler and drip systems to achieve maximum plant health. We have developed our methodology with the plant through education and experience. We believe water is a precious resource in Arizona and determine the right amounts of water for each plant and species. We use commercial grade main lines which double the life expectancy of typical irrigation installs. For water conservation to plants and trees with different needs, we recommend multiple zone irrigation layouts. While slightly higher in initial cost, they will save a homeowner and our desert neighborhood thousands a gallons of precious water usage during this time of extensive drought in our state and the southwest.

We consult with local nurseries and then advise you on our recommendations for the best trees, plants, shrubs and florals that are drought tolerant based on your individual project’s needs.

Ornamental Plantings

Island Pools & Landscaping redefines the essence of ornamental plants grown for display purposes, rather than functional ones. While some plants are both ornamental and functional, the term “ornamental” refers to plants which have no value beyond being attractive, although many people feel that this is value enough. Whether floriculture and nursery plants, shrubs, trees, and foliage plants, the types of ornamental plantings are unlimited.

Decorative Landscape Rock & Crushed Granite

Island Pools & Landscaping can supply and install decorative landscape boulders typically sizes are 2’ x 2’ or 3’ x 2’ that are used as decorative landscape accents and or waterfalls. Larger boulders can be supplied and installed however due to the weight of the boulders; they would need to be crane set.

We provide many different sizes and colors of surface crushed granite, river pebbles and rip rap to meet your landscaping needs. Dry river stream beds are also very popular in our valley landscapes. We also know how beautiful the right colored rock can be. The only limit on how beautiful your yard can really be is your imagination and HOA limitations if applicable.

Bringing the beauty of the desert to your front or backyard is while reducing blowing dust and reducing mud is preferable in our desert landscaping. We offer a variety of crushed and natural stones, flagstone, boulders, building stone, river rock and more. Crushed granite as a ground cover is more environmentally friendly, reduces moisture and bugs over traditional wood chips and is also more economical.

Grading & Retaining Walls

Our professional team wants every retaining wall project to be top notch. We use lasers and zip levels to accurately measure each project and elevation. We thorough seal the back of every wall and provide weep holes and hard drainage as needed. Using the most modern equipment, we can fit into restricted access areas, making it ideal for entering yards and tight areas around your property, providing grading and excavation services. We don’t automatically assume the yard will drain. We measure the elevation of each and every project with a Zip Level prior to the start of landscaping.

Retaining walls consist of modular concrete blocks or stone that interlock or are stacked with each other. These walls are for the purpose of holding back a sloping face of soil to provide a solid, vertical front. Without adequate retention, slopes can cave, slump or slide. Their unique construction allows for higher and steeper walls to be constructed with the ability to retain the force of lateral earth pressure created by the backfill soil.

They can be installed in a wide variety of colors, sizes, and materials. We can incorporate straight or curved lines with steps and corners. Retaining walls are ideal for not only slope support, but also for widening areas that would otherwise be unusable due to the natural slope of the land. For grade changes and for other functional reasons such as swimming pool or spa walling, widening driveways, walkways, or creating more space in an outdoor area.

Walls & Columns are typically constructed from flat masonry blocks, or split face blocks in all standard all sizes up to 60”. Quality Artificial Turf

High quality artificial turfs installations are taking the valley’s desert landscape by storm! They save thousands of gallons of water for each new artificial lawn installed vs real grass, or existing lawn converted. Many cities are mandating no new real grass lawns and are even reimbursing homeowners a percentage of their installation dollars to convert existing lawns to artificial turf based on the dramatic water shortage we have been experiencing for the last 20 years in the southwest. In 2023 there is a lot of talk of significant water rationing based on the minimal water resources avliable from the Colorado river.

Sod / Real Grass Installation

Sod/Real Grass Installation requires an experienced team. At Island Pools & Landscaping, we will help you determine the best route to take depending on budget, irrigation, and water drainage needs. We will also test your soil for PH balance.

We will remove any existing dead or unwanted grass, weeds, and any roots below the ground in the first 3-4 inches. The proper prepping of the ground may include leveling for a smooth install, easy mowing, and maintenance.

Our installers will blend in the seams, cutting edges around landscaping and holes for sprinklers. Finally, we will set-up any sprinkler timers.
